How to Get Blood Out Carpet and Auto Upholstery

Why is it so hard to remove blood stains?

Blood stains can be difficult to remove because blood contains a protein called hemoglobin that binds tightly to fabric fibers. When blood comes into contact with fabric or carpet, the hemoglobin in the blood binds to the fibers and begins to set, making it harder to remove the stain.

Additionally, if the blood has had time to dry or has been exposed to heat, it can become even more difficult to remove. The heat can cause the protein in the blood to coagulate and bond even more firmly to the fibers.

Another factor that can make blood stains difficult to remove is that many people tend to use warm or hot water to clean stains. However, using warm or hot water can actually make the stain worse by setting it further into the fabric. Instead, it's best to use cold water when treating blood stains.

How to remove blood out of carpet step by step

What you’ll need:

Steps you can follow:

  1. Act fast: The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove the stain. So, it's important to start working on it as soon as possible.

  2. Blot the stain: Use a clean, white microfiber towel or paper towel to blot up as much of the blood as possible. Do not rub the stain, as this will push it deeper into the fibers.

  3. Apply a cleaning solution: First we will apply a enzyme cleaner solution via a spray bottle to the stain and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

  4. Blot the stain again: After the cleaning solution has had time to work, blot the area again with a clean, damp microfiber towel, or paper towel.

  5. Now blot the area with a cold damp towel and hydrogen peroxide. Do this by diluting the hydrogen peroxide 50/50 with water in a spray bottle and spray the blood stain. Then blot the area with the cold damp towel that is just damp from water.

  6. Now use an extractor machine like the Bisell Spot Clean Pro Linked Here: https://amzn.to/3B2yxFM. Mix a few ounces of the Zeiff Pet Stain and Odor Eliminator into the cold water solution tank and use the machine to extract out as much of the stain as possible.

  7. Dry the area: Use a clean, dry towel, to blot the area until it is dry. If the stain was on upholstery, you can also use a fan or open window to help speed up the drying process.

Note: It's always a good idea to test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the carpet or upholstery before applying it to the stain. This will help you avoid any potential damage or discoloration. Clarity Car Washing is not responsible for any damage to your vehicle.

The Recap

To remove blood stains, act quickly, blot the stain, and use cold water to clean. Use a cleaning solution like hydrogen peroxide or a commercial enzyme cleaner, blot the area again, and use an extractor machine to remove the stain. Dry the area and test any cleaning solution before using it on the entire stain.
