Electric Pressure Washer Vs. Gas Pressure Washer

Electric pressure washers and gas pressure washers both have the same basic function: to clean surfaces with pressurized water.

However, there are several key differences between the two types of pressure washers:

The Difference In Power Between Electric and Gas Pressure Washers

Gas pressure washers are generally more powerful than electric pressure washers. Electric pressure washers generally range between 1,000 and 3,000 PSI. Gas pressure washers can go from 2,000 PSI to more than 5,000 PSI. This is because they have larger engines and can generate higher water pressure and flow rates. This makes them better suited for heavy-duty cleaning tasks like removing oil stains from driveways, cleaning large outdoor spaces, and preparing surfaces for painting. Gas pressure washers with higher PSI ratings are also often used for other heavy-duty cleaning tasks, such as cleaning large commercial areas, removing graffiti or paint, and removing tough stains from concrete or metal surfaces.

Portability Difference Between Electric and Gas Pressure Washers

Electric pressure washers are typically more portable than gas pressure washers because they are smaller and lighter. They also don't require fuel, which means they can be used indoors or in enclosed spaces without the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. However, gas pressure washers can be more convenient for outdoor cleaning tasks because they don't require access to an electrical outlet. Generally if conducting mobile services, you will need a gas generator to be able to power an electric pressure washer, which sometimes defeats the purpose of getting an electric pressure washer and makes it less portable because you’ll have to carry both pieces of equipment.

Noise Difference Between Electric and Gas Pressure Washers

Gas pressure washers tend to be louder than electric pressure washers because of their engines. Gas pressure washers generally range between 70 dB and 100dB, so yes they can be quite loud. But for electric pressure washers, they usually range between only 60 and 90 decibels. This can be a consideration if you live in a neighborhood with noise restrictions or if you want to use the pressure washer early in the morning or late at night.

Maintenance Difference Electric and Gas Pressure Washers

Gas pressure washers require more maintenance than electric pressure washers because they have engines that need to be serviced regularly. As a general rule, it is recommended to change the oil after the first 20 hours of use and then every 50 hours of use thereafter. However, if the pressure washer is used in dusty or dirty environments, it may require more frequent oil changes. Electric pressure washers require less maintenance, but they do have electrical components that need to be protected from water and moisture. Often times, it’s good to buy a warranty for either option if available at the retail store you are purchasing it from. This is especially true for cheaper electric pressure washers that break more easily.

Cost Difference Between Electric and Gas Pressure Washers

Gas pressure washers are generally more expensive than electric pressure washers. This is because they have larger engines and more complex mechanical components. However, they can also last longer and be more durable than electric pressure washers, which can make them a better long-term investment for heavy-duty cleaning tasks. Often gas pressure washers will be used for large commercial operations, so the cost will be negligible compared to the revenue brought in from the machine. Electric pressure washers are more suitable for residential and private use.

The Bottom Line…

Gas and electric pressure washers range in their usage. Generally you’ll want a gas pressure washer when you are conducting commercial work or want to perform commercial quality of work on your own property. However, for most cases, an electric pressure washer will be better for residential use for its lower cost and lower noise output.
