Cost of Express Wash Breakdown and Itemized

So one of the issues I get a lot is sticker shock when it comes to the cost of our express wash. It takes between 15-30 minutes and costs currently between $60-80. For some people, they see a car wash and $69 and they get freaked out! Are they getting scammed? Is it worth it? Well, I wanted to explain the actual cost that goes into the express wash. Here are the following costs that go into the price:

  • Gas (van and generator)

  • Chemicals

  • Water

  • Tool maintenance (Pressure washer, water pump, towels, spray bottles (they break often), generator oil and replacement)

  • Van maintenance

  • Insurance (business insurance and van insurance)

  • Taxes

  • Labor

  • Labor costs while in transit

  • licensing

The labor cost of the time to get to the appointment is between 10-15 minutes multiply by 2 for both ways: $12

Labor cost for service completion: $12

Travel Labor Cost: $18

Chemicals: $1.50

Water: $1.50

Gas: $9

Tool Maintenace: $1

Van Maintenace: $1

Insurance: $.50

Taxes: $8

licensing: $.50

Total: $53

In the best-case scenario, we’re looking at a 23.1% profit margin on a $60 wash in 45 minutes. If we average that out to include errors and traffic it’s a 10-16.5% profit margin in 60 minutes from departure to return. Far from theft, but still managing to grow the business. The most important variables are how long it takes to get to the appointment and how long it takes to complete the appointment.

Hopefully, this gives some idea of the costs associated with mobile detailing and washing. Stay shining San Diego!
